Instructions for task #1 in CM-41 Lab

Do the following to create and modify pages on your geocities website. -- Due next week

1. Using notepad, create a new HTML page named "TASK1.HTM" on your disk:
   • The page title should be "Lab Task #1 for CM-41".
   • Put your name in a large centered heading at the top of the page.
   • Put a horizontal rule across the page underneath this heading.
   • Next, add headings in all six sizes, followed by text. Each heading should say "This is a heading of size H1", or H2, etc. The text should also state the heading size ("Above is a heading of size H1", etc.)
   • Illustrate "boldface" and "italics" (and both) in some of your text: this is in italics, this is in boldface, this is bold italic text. Also try BIG, SMALL, SUB, SUP, etc.
   • Put another horizontal rule after the last heading and text.
   • Add a link back to your home page (index.html).
2. Use the browser (Netscape) to look at your new page. (Click on "File/Open File" rather than "Open Location".) Continue editing until it is correct.
3. From your website, download your home page (index.html) to a backup file named "I1004A.HTM" on your disk.
4. From the "CM-41 Class Website", download the following page to "METRIC.HTM" on your disk:
   • http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/9120/metric.html
5. Bring up the Geocities File-Manager (via link on our class website page). Use "EZ Upload", with "lowercase" and "html" options both set, to upload your "TASK1.HTM" page as task1.html". Also upload the metric page. When uploads are done, check that the two pages are listed with their names in lower case and ending in "html" (not "HTM").
6. Select the "index.html" file and edit it as follows: Between two horizontal rules, near the middle of the page, add links to:
   • The class website home page ("/CapeCanaveral/Lab/9120").
   • The Suffolk County Community College home page.
   • A page named "metric.html" in your website.
   • A page named "task1.html" in your website.
   Be sure to use a break (BR) between each link. Make a new paragraph and add a "mailto:" link for email to your "hotmail" address. Display your email address ("whatever@hotmail.com") in text as well as in the link.
7. Use the "Preview" feature to check your changes. "Save and continue editing" your index page. Also check it with the browser. (You may launch a new browser and still keep the editor in a window!) When it is correct, "Save".
8. Now, use the browser to look at your revised home page. (Press the "Reload" button to get the latest version.) Save it on your disk in a backup file named "I970927B.HTM".
9. Check your work:
   • Check the link to the Task 1 page. Is it there?
   • Save it on a backup file called "T1004A.HTM" on your disk.
   • Check the link back to your home page. Does it work?
   • Check the link to your copy of the metric page. Is it there? (Make sure it's your copy, not my original, which will disappear soon.)
   • Go back to your home page, and check the link to the class page. Does it work?
   • Now, look at the Course Outline.
